Failed business, now need new idea?

hi, i ran a small shoe store only to lose out to places like ebay etc as people were selling shoes cheaper than i could buy them, i then invested money in a wedding shop only for asda to start selling drsses a month before i was ready to open, i managed to sell all the stock i had and didnt lose much that time





i really want to run my own business, my man runs a small furniture business which makes a good return but he says only men should be in business and im living proof of that





i want to prove him wrong so much





if anyone has any ideas of what would make a good small to medium sized business could you please let me know,

Why don%26#039;t you open an eBay shop? If your business lost out due to places like eBay it makes sense to trade via the eBay route yourself.





I%26#039;ve no idea about what kind of business you could open. Have you any particular interests or hobbies which could be turned into a business? (jewellery making, painting, sewing etc)

don%26#039;t worry that your previous businesses haven%26#039;t worked out - you gave it a go and have probably learned loads, perhaps you just didn%26#039;t do enough market research before hand (especially the bridal wear)


my advice would be to start something with little start-up costs - and don%26#039;t relay on your man for money! sell things you have and no longer need to raise a little cash and start with that.


i started my business on just a few hundred pounds and could have done it for less if i didn%26#039;t get the grant i had.


make sure you stick to something you are interested in so you don%26#039;t lose motivation when you need it most


perhaps you could try selling online - on either your own website or something like ebay, that will keep your overheads down. there are loads of companies online who give free websites so that won%26#039;t be a barrier, try http://www.microsoft-office-live.co.uk/i...


maybe you should consider a short business planning course so you have a better idea of the market, finances etc before you take the plunge again!?

YOU CAN SUCCEED- just do more planning and though behind what you are going to do next also get some business advice- NOT from your man as I think he may be more negative .





Why don%26#039;t you capitalise on your mans business and sell home accessories- LOL you have his company to help with this- you can sell bedding for his bedroom furniture also great vases, lights, Think you will get my drift- and if he has showroom - you will a have a free showcase for yourself- why not go into home design and again you will be bale to promote his furniture





If you work together you can show him you can be a great assett to him-

Is this business going to do well? Why or why not? Have you been creating your business plans and sticking to them? What reason why you have failed in your previous business? What ways can you avoid making the same mistake?





If you man is running a successful business, I suggest watching him and see what he does that makes it successful and if that what you did and adopt that to your business. If he runs the store, see if you can help out with his store and run it like a manager or have him show you how to be the book keeper. If you can run his business with success, then you can try to run yours with success.
Reply:Retail is hard, you have zero resources compared to the biggies, except you and your staff.


Believe in your product, people buy on value not price. Who would want a wedding dress from ASDA? I´m sure some people will buy, but others want the feeling of being special at there wedding and may have got that from you had you not wimped out of your business.


Retail is hard, no one else cares if you fail or not, and you need to be able to handle this.
Reply:my daughter aged nearly 2 is lactose intolerant and it is nearly impossible to find lactose free produce aimed at kids. theres certainly nothing on offer in our local supermarkets. she also doesn%26#039;t like soya so the yogurts on offer (such as alpro) are a no-no. Anyway there is a real niche in the market for lactose free produce aimed at kids and if u had the know how (or were willing to learn about it) i reckon this would be a huge earner. good luck
Reply:Being successful in business is dependent on two main things. Firstly, never start a business unless you know what you are doing inside out. That way you have a fighting chance. Secondly, you need luck, which you don%26#039;t seem to have had to date, good luck that is. Then there are other factors. Make sure you have finance behind you. You have to live while the business is building up, it%26#039;s no good starting with nothing. Find a good Bank Manager and Accountant, know where you want to be in 3 years time, and write our Business Plan. So what I am saying is, its no good asking what makes money. Because I could say, writing computer programs makes money, but what%26#039;s the point if you haven%26#039;t a clue about how to do that. Stick to what you know.
