What do I Feed A Horse With StringHalt?
We had a gelding with stringhalt for several years. He had it when we bought him, but was such a great kid horse we bought him anyway. He had it pretty bad in both back legs.
As far as I know, feed has nothing to do with it, but I never did find out what the cause was. The best thing to help him was keeping him in good condition with excersise, plenty of it. He also was kept in a large pen, about 150 feet X 200 feet so he could move around a lot.
Because he did do that funny looking thing where he would lift his back leg up, hold it there, then slam it down to the ground, we also had a chiropractor adjust him. The chiro gave us some stretching exercises to have him to. They helped him.
Other then looking funny when he picked up his back legs, and he was very hard for the farrier to work on ( poor guy ) he was great. He was a very good gymkhana horse, trail horse, and all around horse that anyone could ride.
You may want to look up string halt in the merck vet manual online and see what it says. Maybe also talk with your vet about how to care for your horse to keep it from getting worse. Maybe even have your vet diagnose him. Depending on your farrier, he may not be correct.
Good luck
Reply:Good luck, just remember if his back feet are hard for you to pick up, have patience with him, if he truly has string halt, he cant help it. Report It
Reply:chaff would be good but if you have got rid of the dandelion from the paddok that should be ok if it's not severe it should correct itself.
a muscle relaxent is good too from the vet depending on how severe it's called mephanesin.
Reply:I don't know very much about it except that is is very similar to shivers ( which my horse has)
You might find this site helpful, it was very useful to me and he is much improved now.
