Why are community moderators willing to do paid work for free?

Why are you working for free? Do you realize by working for free for Yahoo!, you are essentially helping make Yahoo! a more profitable company. In turn, that means that the stock goes up (ok ok, this is an oxy moron) and the RICH get RICHER. Meanwhile, poor peon's like us are doing hard work FOR FREE.

What gives? Would you all work for Microsoft for free too? Maybe you could polish Bill Gates shoes for free? No reason to delete this as it's a serious legitimate question. I just recently saw the announcement on the front page and I am curious, as a strong member of a strong union why anyone would work for free?

Why are community moderators willing to do paid work for free?
You make sense! but there is a lot of but: but what if, but how about, but....
Reply:They could be motivated by the same thing that makes people like me get out of bed at all hours of the night to answer Fire Calls, (I am a Volunteer Fireman %26amp; Chaplain). Unlike some of the VFD members because I am also a Chaplain I am on call for 12 different Fire Departments, and I pay for my own gas to do it, the ones that work free for Yahoo are not out any money for their acts of charity. Not that I mind just pointing out that some eople in this world do not put a price tag on everything then there are those like you! And BTW I used to be a Paid "PROFEESSIONAL IAFF FIREFIGHTER as ws my Grandfather before me, so dont even give me the Union line! Sell your Union Shop to Jimmy Hoffa, BTW have you any idea where he is these days?
Reply:In many cases, Yahoo is willing to pay for the moderator's services by giving them Free perks, such as membership in the pay portions of Yahoo's many sites. Others actually enjoy contributing to the sense of community in the chat rooms, 360, and Y!A, and to them, THAT is pay enough. It's not as though they have to sign on for a specified amount of time or actualy produce anything for Yahoo. They just monitor things to make sure no one is violating the rules and they get to have fun just like the REST of the Yahoo community.

The way I see it, if THEY aren't complaining then why worry about it? there's no one standing behind them with a cattle prod, making them do whatever it is that they do.
